Where reflection meets momentum, the real work of building a category starts to show. This journal captures a quick pulse on what’s moving, what’s clarifying, and what’s next.

Reflection doesn’t always follow an Apr 9, 2026 clock. It follows the momentum. And right now, the momentum is saying a few useful things rather loudly.

Retrospective | Introspective

SMARTsales is humming. Not in the dramatic, brass-band, look-at-us way. More in the satisfying "the engine turned over and kept going" way.

And Kelly’s return has the energy right where it needs to be. Which, frankly, is a far better use of everyone’s time than founders pretending to be seven people in a trench coat.

New Focus: Category Design

Lately, the lens has shifted to Category Design.

I’m reading The Category Creation Formula and Play Bigger, and the idea is landing right on schedule: we’re not just building products. We’re defining the "Missing" in the market and designing the category ourselves.

That’s the work.

Not louder features. Not shinier packaging. Not joining someone else’s box and calling it strategy. Category Design is about naming the gap, framing the problem, and building durable value around the solution before the market catches up.

Looking Ahead

Next week starts the Category Creation journey.

That should be interesting. In the best possible way.

Executive Summary

  • Momentum: Reflection is following momentum, not the calendar.
  • Operational Pulse: SMARTsales is humming, and Kelly’s return has reset the energy in exactly the right direction.
  • Strategic Shift: The new focus is Category Design: defining the "Missing" in the market and shaping the category ourselves.
  • Next Up: Next week begins the Category Creation journey.
